This is the official website of the Chesterfield & Mansfield Province of the Grand Lodge of England, a section of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.
If you are a Buff, or know something about the Buffs, or if you are curious newcomer, this site will tell you something about our Order and its work in Chesterfield and Mansfield — The Heart of England.
Our Province nestles in the midst of some of the most beautiful and dramatic countryside in the British Isles. Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire are home to some of the most beautiful statley homes, like Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall as well as some important historical sites such as the Revolution House in Chesterfield and the ancient Ice Age hunting ground of Creswell Crags on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border.
Proud as we are of our history, we are equally proud of our industry and our future. We are right in the heart of the former northern coal mining engine of Britain, with Buffalo Lodges at the heart of some former coal mining communities. We have an equally great heritage in the engineering industry, with one of our biggest claims to fame being the part that Chesterfield's Markham Works played in the construction of the Channel Tunnel in the early 1990s.
The decline of industry in England hit the Chesterfield and Mansfield hard, but with a strong character and steely determination, we have moved on, and Chesterfield and Mansfield are growing in popularity as a number one tourist hotspot, conference venue and commuter residential retreat. With excellent links to the M1 corridor and national rail network, and the Robin Hood Airport, you will have no problem finding us, (and visiting one of our, very 'special' Buffalo Lodges perhaps?).
